BirdHouse Counter 32mm hole Apex top Display Below

Nest box Counters

We have made this highly sensitive piece of electronic equipment precise enough for the serious professional, yet simple and robust enough to make the science of ecology exciting to nature enthusiasts. Scientists measure nest box visit frequency to measure how successfully animals are finding food and breeding, but until now there has never been a nest box visit counter commercially available. We have sold our counters to young families, keen ornithologists, environmental consultants (particularly for bat monitoring), and university research programmes.

Each counter creates a dual Infra-Red light beam (invisible to humans and other animals) across the entrance to the nest box. When an animal passes through the entrance, it breaks the light beams, and the built-in microprocessor analyses which beam was broken first, and which was restored first, to determine the direction of travel - i.e. was the animal looking into, entering, looking out of, or leaving the nest? In this way it can maintain and display an accurate count of the number of visits to the nest.

Each counter is entirely self-contained, running for a year off two AA batteries. It can be screwed onto the front of the nest box in a matter of seconds using the two self-starting screws provided and instantly start monitoring nest box activity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If you have children in your family, then seeing the count on your Nest box Counter go up and up each day will make your nest boxes really come alive for them.

Details of this Bird House Counter

The wooden housing of this Nest box Counter has been specially designed to fit onto the Gardenature Side View Camera Box, called the ?OddBox?, and is made of our own tress which came down in the storm of 2012. It will also fit onto a number of Apex top boxes, such as the RSPB EasyClean apex top box.

The 32mm hole makes it suitable for all of the smaller hole nesting birds, including Blue Tits, Great Tits, Coal Tits, Marsh Tits, House Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Pied Flycatchers, and Nuthatches.

The 26mm thick wooden block (PEFC certified Red Cedar) in which the electronics are housed add extra protection to the nest and so encourages birds to nest, increasing occupancy rates.

Reading results from your Nest Box Counter

Up to four of these counters can be connected simultaneously to each one of our data-loggers (sold separately) using cables of up to 10m long to record the precise time and date of every entry and exit from each nest box onto a memory card, so you can monitor the progress of the full breeding cycle in detail never possible before now.

Alternatively, the large, clear, five-digit display allows you to read the latest visit count, so you can read your Bird House counter day by day or week by week without disturbing the nesting birds and record the results in a nature diary, noting how the visit frequency varies with changes in weather and the stage in the breeding cycle.

Fit a counter to one of our Birdhouse Camera Systems and add observations from inside the nest box to your nature diary as well.
