This is our ultra-low power RFID Logger, which is entirely self contained and will run for months on just 5 AA batteries, sensing every time an animal enters or leaves a nest and storing the time and date of every visit, including the direction of movement and the PIT tag data id (where present) onto an SD card.
The ultra-low power and long battery-life of these readers results from the use of a dual light-beam detection system. The animals passing through the mouth of the logger break two infrared light-beams. This lets the logger record the direction of movement of the animal and also activates the RFID coil, which shuts down again as soon as the animal's ID tag is read, or after a short timeout if the animal has no tag.
We have designed our own RFID reader to be fully integrated into the logger, and ours is the only solution which records a measure of read strength and potential missed reads, as well as recording the passing of animals without tags.
We design and 3D print a variety of housings for the logger, so that it can be fitted to bird boxes, bat boxes, tree holes, or down burrows.
This product listing in the shop is a generic listing for all the special variants we are making for specific organisations, universities and government wildlife departments.
